How the gravel amount is calculated
Gravel is ordered by volume in cubic yards, or by weight in tons. Multiply the area by the depth, with the depth converted from inches to feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by 1.4 for tons:
There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Landscaping gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so a yard is roughly 2,800 pounds. Suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard or by the ton, so both numbers are useful when comparing prices.
