How the gravel amount is calculated

Gravel is ordered by volume in cubic yards, or by weight in tons. Multiply the area by the depth, with the depth converted from inches to feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by 1.4 for tons:

Cubic yards = Area × ( Depth ÷ 12 ) ÷ 27   ·   Tons = Cubic yards × 1.4

There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Landscaping gravel weighs about 1.4 tons per cubic yard, so a yard is roughly 2,800 pounds. Suppliers sell gravel by the cubic yard or by the ton, so both numbers are useful when comparing prices.

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need?
Multiply the area by the depth in feet for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards, and multiply by 1.4 for tons. The calculator above does this and gives a cost by the yard and by the ton.
How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?
About 1.4 tons, roughly 2,800 pounds, for typical landscaping gravel. Wet or dense stone weighs a little more. Suppliers often price by the ton, so the tonnage matters.
How much does a ton of gravel cover?
A ton is about 0.7 cubic yards, which covers roughly 75 to 80 square feet at 3 inches deep, or about 100 square feet at 2 inches.
How deep should gravel be?
About 2 inches to top up, 3 inches for a new decorative area, and 4 inches or more for a path or driveway that carries weight, usually over a compacted base.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
