How the sod amount is calculated
Sod is sold by the square foot, the roll, or the pallet. Measure the area, add a waste allowance for cuts, then divide by the unit size:
A standard roll is 2 by 5 feet, so it covers 10 square feet. A pallet usually covers about 450 square feet, though some are 400 or 500. Add 5 percent waste for a simple lawn, up to 10 percent for a yard with curves and beds. Lay sod the same day it is delivered.
