Paver Calculator

A paver calculator tells you how many pavers a patio or walkway needs, plus the bedding sand and base gravel underneath, and the cost. It takes the area, the paver size, and a waste allowance. Type the size below and pick a paver. Everything runs in your browser, with no signup.

How the paver count is calculated

Each paver covers its width times length in inches, divided by 144 to get square feet. Divide the area, with a waste allowance, by that for the count:

Pavers = Area × (1 + Waste) ÷ ( Paver width × Paver length ÷ 144 )

Under the pavers you need a base. Allow about 4 inches of compacted gravel and 1 inch of bedding sand, which the calculator gives in cubic yards. Add 5 percent waste for a simple running bond, or 10 percent for herringbone, circles, and curved edges.

  • Area (12 × 10)120 ft²
  • Paver6 x 9 in (0.375 ft² each)
  • Area with 10% waste132 ft²
  • Pavers (132 ÷ 0.375)352 pavers
  • Bedding sand (120 × 1 in)0.4 yd³
  • Base gravel (120 × 4 in)1.5 yd³

Frequently asked questions

How many pavers do I need?
Divide the patio area, with a waste allowance, by the square feet each paver covers. The calculator above does this for any paver size and also gives the base materials and cost.
How much base and sand?
About 4 inches of compacted gravel and 1 inch of bedding sand under the pavers. The calculator gives both in cubic yards for your area.
How much waste should I add?
About 5 percent for a simple running bond, up to 10 percent for herringbone, circular patterns, or curved edges with many cuts.
How thick should the base be?
4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel for a patio or walkway, 6 to 12 inches for a driveway, topped with about 1 inch of bedding sand.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or saved.
